The Banana River

The Banana River generally runs in between Merritt Island and the barrier island of Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, and Satellite Beach. The Banana River is connected to the Indian River Lagoon system, though it is not considered to be a part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Mangroves and seagrass within the river provide a wildlife habitat that includes porpoises, stingrays, manatees, oysters and many species of birds and fish. Property along both sides of the Banana River is sold at a luxury premium, because of the desirable views and navigable water, though boaters must beware of numerous tidal flats outside the marked channels. At 31 miles long, the Banana River is certainly one of Brevard’s natural wonders.
